Opening of Washington’s first Latin American bookstore

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Mexican publishing house Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE) will open on Wednesday, November 18 the first Latin American bookstore in Washington, D.C.

The bookstore, Pórtico, will be located at 1350 New York Ave, N.W., offering fiction and non-fiction titles in Spanish, as well as Latin American films on DVDs.

IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno, Mexico’s Ambassador to the United States Arturo Sarukhán and FCE Director Joaquín Díez-Canedo will attend the opening ceremony, scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. at the bookstore.

Pórtico will operate under a partnership agreement between the IDB and FCE, offering publications from both institutions but mostly books in Spanish from various publishers.

The IDB publishes some 200 books and working papers a year on development-related topics such as finance, macroeconomics, poverty reduction, government reform, education, labor, trade and regional integration.

FCE was founded in 1934 to give Mexican students access to economics texts unavailable in Spanish. Pórtico is its first bookstore in the United States. FCE also is present in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, Spain and Venezuela.
