The Research Department (RES) of the IDB cordially invites you to the seminar: The Policymaking Process. Lessons from Central America and Beyond.

The work pioneered at the IDB more than a decade ago for eight South American countries profoundly impacted the understanding of political institutions and the policymaking process in Latin America. Unique for its time, the project combined outstanding scholarly research by leading economists and political scientists using cutting edge methodologies with a conscious and clear cut goal of providing valuable insights and information for the broader policy community: domestic, foreign, and multilateral.  Now, thanks to the support of the Baker Institute, this work has been expanded to a set of Central American countries. In this seminar, the original papers will be evaluated in light of changes that have taken place since they were first published, the new papers will be presented, and policymakers who participated in drafting the original reports will evaluate the influence of this work on their day to day activities.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Mario Bergara (President, Central Bank of Uruguay)
  • Koldo Echabarría (IDB)
  • Erika de la Garza (Director of the Baker Institute’s Latin America Initiative)
  • Mark Jones (Rice University)
  • José R. Molinas Vega (Minister, Planificación del Desarrollo Económico y Social, Paraguay)
  • Mónica Pachón (Universidad del Rosario, Colombia)
  • José Juan Ruiz (IDB)
  • Sebastian Saiegh (UCSD)
  • Pablo Spiller (Berkeley University)
  • Mariano Tommasi (Economic Advisor, Jefatura de Gabinete, Argentina)
