Ricardo Henriques,Secretary of Social Assistance and Human Rights of the State of Rio de Janeiro, will present the peace strategy, inclusion and development of Rio de Janeiro, in the context of the challenges facing the city that will host the upcoming Football World Cup and Olympic Games.

The favelas of Rio de Janeiro have existed for over half a century and have grown faster than the rest of the city. The conditions of violence and deprivation that prevail within them have led to a disintegration of the city. In response to this problem, the State of Rio de Janeiro is implementing a new model of public security and police: Pacification Police Units (UPPs). In the first phase, the UPPs regain public control of the territories occupied by gangs and militants, reversing the main factors of violence and territorial exclusion. Secondly, the priority is to promote a cycle of social inclusion, economic development, and urban integration.
