Innovation in the Service Sector: Opportunities for the Caribbean

Belize City, December 5th and 6th, 2011 - Radisson Hotel

The Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Network is a network of policy makers responsible for science and technology policy in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. The STI Network Dialogues are forums initiated by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) where stakeholders from IDB member countries gather to discuss common policy issues related to the performance of their STI systems and to explore regional cooperation initiatives.

The network’s main goal is to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences among the IDB’s borrowing member countries on policy and institutional reform initiatives designed to strengthen the capacity and innovation performance of national LAC economies. Taking into account the diversity of the countries’ economic structures and institutional characteristics, the network seeks to identify best policy practices in areas such as strengthening industry/science relationships, innovation financing and the development of top level talent in science and technology (S&T), and how research and development (R&D) support and incentive measures can increase productivity and competitiveness in firms.

Network representatives participate in regional as well as sub-regional meetings in which they discuss possible cooperation initiatives that could build upon and leverage the region’s human, technological, financial and natural resources in order to develop regional and/or global innovation hubs. The Caribbean Policy Dialogue is a sub-regional meeting co-sponsored by the Caribbean Export Development Agency.

This Dialogue is aimed at creating a bridge between Caribbean policy makers and Private Sector stakeholders, with the goal of indentifying priority areas of the service sector that need to be strengthened in order to make the Caribbean economies more competitive.
