Regional Policy Dialogue: Teacher Unions as Partners for Improved Teacher Quality and Learning Outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean

Date: 15 Nov 2011 to 16 Nov 2011

Time: 9:00 AM

Location: Washington DC, Centro de Conferencias Enrique V. Iglesias - CR-2 , United States

Latin America and the Caribbean have progressed enormously in recent years to expand educational coverage and to reduce the disparities in access to education. However, the region still faces challenges in improving learning and in closing the gap in student achievement; and a good teacher can help close the academic achievement gap between students from different socioeconomic levels. This is why both teachers and teacher unions as organizations that defend their collective interests are important players in the process of educational reform. In 2011 the Education Network will address the issue of Teacher Unions as Partners for Improved Teacher Quality and Learning Outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean.  The Education Division will invite the Vice-Ministers from its 26 member countries to participate in the hemispheric meeting during the 15th and 16th of November, 2011 at the Inter-American Development Bank headquarters in Washington, DC. The Education Division has also invited teacher union representatives to participate in a collaborative discussion with the Vice-Ministers of their respective countries on November 15, 2011.
