About Nicaragua

Nicaragua, the largest nation in Central America, is located right in center of the isthmus between North and South America. It is bordered by Honduras to the North and Costa Rica to the South, the Pacific Ocean to the West and the Caribbean to the East. Nicaragua is home to 28 volcanoes (7 active and 21 inactive), 7 percent of the world’s biodiversity and two large lakes, Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca) and Lake Managua (Xolotlan).

Originally a colony, Nicaragua claimed its independence from Spain in 1821, when it became a Republic. Its culture reflects the heritage of the colonial period fused with native elements.
