Implementing a Forward-looking Agenda on Trade Facilitation

The 10th Hemispheric Meeting of the Trade and Integration Network of the IDB Regional Policy Dialogue was attended by representatives of 20 countries from Latin America and the Caribbean. Participants were Vice-Ministers of Trade and Director Generals of Customs, experts and IDB officials. The meeting was organized by the Integration and Trade Sector of the Vice Presidency for Sectors and Knowledge of the Bank.

The meeting focused on trade facilitation issues of major relevance to the region at the current juncture: the concept and good practices of Coordinated Border Management, the Agreement on Trade Facilitation of the World Trade Organization, and the process of implementing measures and reforms in trade facilitation in the region. These are seen as critical for ensuring an efficient and secure flow of goods across borders, lowering transactional trade costs, and promoting the inclusion of private sector operators of the region in global and regional value chains.

Participants also took part in a field trip to Memphis, Tennessee, where they had the opportunity to visit the FedEx Global Hub and have a first-hand experience in the functioning of a best practice in trade facilitation. Meetings were also held with the United States Customs and Border Protection Service, and with Memphis community officials and private sector representatives, on the positive impact of the logistical hub on local development.
