IDB/INTAL-WTO-CARICOM Regional Workshop on Market Access Related Issues and Trade Facilitation for Caribbean Countries

The Inter American Development Bank (IDB) through its Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL) and the IDB Integration and Trade Sector together the World Trade Organization Secretariat (WTO) and the Caribbean Community Secretariat (CARICOM), jointly organized the “Regional Workshop on Market Access Related Issues and Trade Facilitation for Caribbean Countries”, that took place in Bridgetown, Barbados, from May 19th to 21st, 2015.

Experts from the WTO Market Access and the Economic Research and Statistics Divisions; the IDB Integration and Trade Sector and the International Trade Center (ITC) have conducted the event.

The objective of the training activity has been enhancing and strengthening participants’ understanding of some of the WTO disciplines that have an impact on market access and customs issues, namely: tariffs and schedules of concessions; rules of origin and how they are used in international trade; customs valuation, maintenance of import licensing procedures; as well as the objectives of the Trade Facilitation Agreement, its requirements and how countries can effectively participate in the ongoing WTO work in this area.

The IDB Trade Facilitation Initiatives in the Caribbean have also been approached, in particular the national experiences of developments of Electronic Single Windows (Barbados, Bahamas, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago) and Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) in Jamaica.

The activity has been designed for capital-based government officials from the CARICOM Member Countries and participation has been by invitation only.
