SERIES OF INTERNATIONAL SEMINARS FOR THE INTAL’s 50° ANNIVERSARY III

Time: 1:30 PM

"Agro-food and Bioeconomy:

The potential for a new production frontier "

The Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL) is a unit of the Integration and Trade Sector of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), set up in 1965 to accompany the continent’s regional and global integration initiatives. As part of the activities to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the INTAL, together with the Interdisciplinary Institute for Political Economy of the University of Buenos Aires (IIEP-BAIRES, UBA-CONICET), organize a series of International Seminars under the topic: ”REGIONAL PRODUCTIVE POTENTIAL AND EXPORT PERFORMANCE: POLICIES AND COMMERCIAL STRATEGY FOR EXTERNAL INSERTION”. On this occasion we present the third seminar of the series, dedicated to agro-food and bioeconomy.

External constraints have emerged in several Latin American countries as a limiting factor to economic growth. In such context, adopting a perspective that goes beyond conjuncture, a view prevails that productive configurations can generate capabilities to increase the supply of foreign trade-related goods and, at the same time, contribute to long-term economic and social development. For those countries that have a strong agriculture and agro-food base, such as Argentina and other economies in the Southern Cone, the rise of new technologies seems to be expanding production frontiers. On the other side, recurrent difficulties arise; often related to price volatility, the need to add value to the chain of production, gain access to markets in which tariffs are obstacles, and where the actors of scientific and technological modernization capitalize on most of the innovation rent.

This seminar aims to tackle these issues by identifying some key questions as jumping-off points for discussion: To what extent is the new frontier affordable for developing countries and through which channels? What are the prospects in producing countries for a technological and value upgrading of their agricultural chains? What is the prospect for the main markets? Are trade agreements necessary in order to facilitate the access?

Of course, the view on these issues cannot be limited to regional or local scope, it must include international dimensions. This is why INTAL and IIEP-BAIRES have invited leading experts as speakers that will give a diversity of views during this seminar, that will be held next Wednesday May 27th from 13:30 at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Conference Room (outbuilding): Pres. J.E. Uriburu 781, Ground Floor (Buenos Aires).
