The V Labor Markets and Social Security Regional Policy Dialogue (RPD), organized by the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) Labor Markets and Social Security Unit will take place in Mexico City on September 21-24 of 2015 and will count with the participation of leading authorities in employment from Latin American and the Caribbean.

The driver of the RPD lies in a reflection on the potential of employment for the growth of people and countries. As part of our search for learning experiences and good practices, the RPD 2014 took us to South Korea. On that occasion, we discovered how Korea’s growth strategy focused public policies on the development of human capital and employment, allowing the country to become the world power it is today. This year we set out to take a look at our own region, in which Mexico provides a very interesting example of a country with a long track record in terms of modernization and improvement of employment and  training policies. Mexico has  achieved important breakthroughs in broadening and enhancing labor intermediation and insertion services, as well as improving the quality and suitability of job training. At the same time, the country still lacks effective systems for worker protection and faces the challenge of achieving coherence in articulating public policies for such a large country, with so many contrasts. Since the country is going through a continuous process of strengthening its employment system, it represents an ideal case to provide a first-hand scenario on successful and innovating public policies, and on the lessons learned to face the challenges posed by the labor market.
